About the shop
Where the wandering becomes polished.
A modern grooming space in Uptown Waterloo built on skill, creativity, and community. Every client leaves sharper, confident, and part of the pack.
The story
We named the shop Stray Dog on purpose.
The best haircut you ever had probably happened at a shop you stumbled into, from a barber you didn't know, on a day you didn't plan it. You walked in a little unsure and walked out looking like someone you recognised. That's the move. That's what this place is for.
Stray Dog sits on King Street North, in Uptown Waterloo, a couple of blocks up from Waterloo Town Square and a short walk from the ION light rail. The door is open seven days a week. The chair is always clean. The music is usually good, and when it isn't, you can complain to the barber about it.
Skill
Three named barbers. Each individually bookable on Squire. Every cut starts with a real consultation.
Creativity
Scissor work, fades, and beard work across straight, wavy, curly, coiled, thick, and textured hair.
Community
Repeat clients become part of the pack. Low-drama, earned, with the same hands on the same head.
We built the shop around a simple idea. A haircut should be a sharp cut, a real conversation, and half an hour that leaves you better than you came in. That's it. We don't sell a capital-E experience. We don't have a VIP tier. We don't ask you to take your shoes off. We just cut hair the way we like to cut it: clean lines, honest scissor work, fades that land where they should land, beards you can actually live with.
"Come in wandering. Walk out polished. Part of the pack."
The team is three barbers: Liam, Ayaan, and Bavy. Each has their own chair, their own clients, and their own booking calendar on Squire. Pick one, book, show up. If you don't know who to book with, the first visit is easy: tell us what you want, and we'll tell you who on the team is the right match. Most of our regulars book the same barber every time. A few shop around. Both are fine.
We work across hair types. Tight fades. Long scissor cuts. Textured hair. Thick hair. Thin hair on its way out. Beards of every degree of ambition. If you've ever been turned away from a shop because your hair wasn't what they specialised in, you won't be turned away here. This is something reviewers call out, and we're proud of it.
When you've been in a few times, you stop being a customer and become part of the pack. That's the shop's word, and we mean it. Repeat clients get the rhythm of the place, know the staff, get booked in faster, and get small things thrown in without asking. It's a low-drama loyalty arc, and it's earned.

The booking system is effortless and I've never had an issue getting in. I rebook right from the Squire app on my way out and the cut is consistent every time. That's the part I care about most. I know exactly what I'm getting.
First time I walked in I didn't know anyone and by the time I walked out I felt like a regular. No pretension, no weird chain-haircut vibe, just good music and someone who actually listens to what you want. I've been back a dozen times since.
I have thick, slightly curly hair and most shops in Waterloo either buzz it short or give up. Stray Dog actually works with it. The scissor cut I booked with Liam was the first time in a while I left a barbershop feeling like the haircut was built for my hair instead of against it.
The shop itself is clean and well-kept in a way most barbershops aren't. Nothing looks tired, the chair isn't covered in yesterday's hair, the tools are sharp. Small thing but it matters when you're paying for the cut.
Walked in needing a haircut, walked out actually styled. That's the part I keep coming back for. You can tell the finish isn't rushed. It holds shape for almost the whole week.
If someone asked me where to get a cut in Uptown, Stray Dog is the first place I'd send them. Honest pricing, named barbers you can book directly, and nobody on the chair has ever rushed me out. That's rare for a shop at this price point.
