Stray Dog Barbershop

For UW students

A barbershop ten minutes from UW campus.

From UW main campus to 43 King Street North is a 10-minute bus on the 9, a 5-minute ION ride from the UW Laurier ION stop, or a 25-minute walk down University Avenue. Worth the ride for a cut you can rebook with the same hands every term.

About this area

Where we are, what it means for UW clients.

UW students cycle in and out of Waterloo on a co-op rhythm: four months on campus, four months on a work term, repeat. The barbershops nearest to campus, the cluster on Lester Street and along University Avenue, are oriented around walk-up student volume. Strong shops; tight on time and mostly clipper-focused. Stray Dog is a different play for UW students: a 10-minute commute trade for a named barber you can rebook every time you're back in town, scissor work for longer hair you're growing out, and a 30-minute Standard Haircut at $35.49 that lands inside most term budgets.

The ION makes this manageable. From the UW Laurier ION stop (the closest stop to main campus, by SLC and the parking-lot side of the Davis Centre), the southbound train lands at Waterloo Public Square in 5 minutes. Walk three minutes north on King Street and you're at the shop. Total trip from SLC to chair: about 12 to 15 minutes. From E7 / E5 (engineering buildings), add 4 minutes to the ION walk; from DC Library or DP Library, you're already a 5-minute walk to the ION stop.

Co-op interview season (early February, late September, mid-June) is when UW students fill the booking calendar fastest. The Faded Haircut at $39.82 with the Haircut and Style consultation is the standard interview-prep booking. We hold a reserved slot pattern Tuesday through Thursday during co-op intake weeks specifically for student bookings; usually fills 48 hours in advance.

Winter term gets its own rhythm: long scissor cuts in early January as people grow out December, then a wave of fresh fades in late February. Spring term lands harder on the international student cohort, which leans toward textured-hair scissor work and standard fades, both of which we run regularly. Summer term is smaller; usually open availability mid-week.

On budget: the $17.70 Beard / Outline service is the cheapest booking on the menu and the right slot for in-between weeks. The $30.97 Haircut and Style (lvl 1) is the right value pick for a full cut. The $35.49 Standard Haircut hits in the middle of the student-area Lester Street range and gets you a senior-or-junior named barber with a real consultation, which the cheaper walk-up shops by nature can't offer.

From UW

Three location-specific questions.

The questions specific to clients booking from University of Waterloo. Answered directly.

  • Yes. Andrew Nuri Hair Studio on Lester Street is a 7-minute walk from SLC and is excellent. The honest pitch for Stray Dog over Andrew Nuri is named-barber Squire booking and the scissor-cut focus for medium and long lengths. If you want a fast, clipper-focused $25 cut walking distance from class, Lester Street is the answer.

  • Yes. Tuesday through Thursday during co-op intake weeks (early February, late September, mid-June) we hold a reserved slot pattern specifically for student bookings. Slots usually fill 48 hours in advance; book through Squire as soon as your interview confirms.

  • Yes. Book back-to-back appointments on Squire under two different accounts, ride the ION together, sit in adjacent chairs. Repeat clients often run this pattern and it's the easiest way to make the trip math work.
